Naging mainit ang paghaharap nina Republican nominee Donald Trump at Democratic nominee Joe Biden sa unang araw ng presidential debate para sa gaganaping US presidential election sa Nobyembre.
Unang binato ng tanong ng moderator at FOX news host na si Chris Wallace ang tungkol sa isyu na bumabalot sa Supreme Court kung saan naging agaran ang pagtatalaga ni Trump sa bagong US Supreme Court Justice na si Amy Coney Barrett.
Pagtatanggol ng Republican president, siya umano ang pangulo ng Estados Unidos kung kaya’t may kapangyarihan siya na pangalanan kaagad si Barrett bilang US Supreme Court Justice kapalit nang pumanaw na si Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
“We won the election. Elections have consequences. We have the Senate, we have the White House, and we have a phenomenal nominee,” ani Trump. “I have a lot of time after the election, as you know.”
Ayon pa sa kasalukuyang pangulo ng Amerika, sinubukan pa umano ni Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell na harangin ang confirmation ni Merrick Garland sa Supreme Court, apat na taon na ang nakararaan at si dating US President Barrack Obama pa ang presidente ng nasabing bansa.
“They had Merrick Garland, but the problem is, they didn’t have the election, so they were stopped,” ani Trump.
“So we won the election and we had the right to do it.”
Sa panig naman ni Biden, naniniwala umano ito na may karapatan ang mamamayan ng Amerika na mamili kung sino ang dapat pumalit sa pwesto ni Ginsburg at mas mabuti raw sana kung hinintay ng Trump administration na November election.
“The American people have a right to have a say in who the Supreme Court nominee is,” wika ni Biden. “They’re not going to get that chance now because we’re in the middle of the election already.”
“We should wait and see what the outcome of this election is,” dagdag pa nito. Paglilinaw ni Biden na hindi siya tumataliwas sa hustisya para sa nakararami.
Hindi na rin ito nakapagpigil na ungkatin ang kaniyang pagkabahala na posibleng tuluyan nang ibasura ng administrasyon ni Trump ang Affordable Care Act.
“It’s just not appropriate to do this before the election,” ani Biden.
