Tiniyak ni Philippine Ambassador to the US Jose Manuel Romualdez sa mga US lawmakers na kritikal sa bagong Anti-Terrorism Law na hindi lalabagin ng batas ang karapatang pantao sa Pilipinas.
Sa kanyang sulat na may petsang Hulyo 16, ipinaliwanag ni Amb. Romualdez sa 45 mambabatas na malinaw na nakasaad sa batas na hindi kasama sa ituturing na uri ng terorismo ang lehitimong nagpapahayag ng opinyon, nagsasagawa ng kilos-protesta, mass actions at iba pang kahalintulad na aktibidad.
Ayon kay Amb. Romualdez, nananatiling commited ang Pilipinas sa proteksyon sa lahat ng civil, political at human rights.
May sapat din daw na safeguards ang Anti-Terrorism Law para maiwasan ang pag-abuso ng mga otoridad.
“The Philippines remains committed to the protection of civil and political liberties as well as human rights. The Anti-Terrorism Act itself strongly mandates that human rights shall be absolute and protected at all times,” ani Amb. Romualdez sa kanyang sulat.
“Its prescribed period on warrantless detention is also not materially dissimilar from the anti-terrorism laws of other countries, including those in the West.”
