Inatasan na ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) na bumuo at i-convene ang Coordinating Committee sa pagitan ng gobyerno at Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) sa ikalawang linggo ng Setyembre sa Davao City para ilatag ang agenda para simulan ang pag-uusap.
Ginawa ni Pangulong Duterte ang direktiba kasunod ng aniya’y produktibong pag-uusap nila ni MNLF founding chairman Nur Misuari kagabi sa Davao City.
Sinabi ni Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo, nais naman ni Misuari na mapasama ang Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) sa gagawin mga konsultasyon, kagaya ng nagdaang tripartite talks sa pagitan ng gobyerno, MNLF at OIC para madetermina ang pagtalima ng pamahalaan sa 1996 Final Peace Agreement sa MNLF.
Ayon kay Sec. Panelo, ang GPH-MNLF Coordinating Committee ay magsisilbing venue para makuha ang kooperasyon ng MNLF sa pagkamit ng kapayapaan sa Sulu, paglaban sa teroristang grupo ng Abu Sayyaf at pagkumbinsi sa mga kamag-anak ng MNLF na magbalik-loob sa gobyerno.
Aasahan umano ng komite ang buong suporta ng Office of the President (OP) sa pagresolba ng matagal ng karahasan kung saan parehong mga Muslim at Kristiyano ang apektado at nagdurusa.
“The President relayed to Mr. Misuari his desire to immediately form a Coordinating Committee between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the MNLF, and instructed the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU) to convene the same by the second week of September in Davao City for agenda setting and for the start of discussions,” ani Sec. Panelo. “On the part of Mr. Misuari, he wished that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) be involved in the consultations, similar to the previous tripartite talks with GPH, MNLF and the OIC, to determine the remaining compliance of the GPH in the 1996 Final Peace Agreement with the MNLF.”
