Kinontra ng Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) ang petisyon ng ilang mambabatas at pamilya ng mga inmate na pansamantalang palayain ang mga political prisoners sa bansa dahil umano sa pangamba ng pagkalat ng Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Sa hirit ng ilang mambabatas at mga kamag-anak ng mga inmates, hiniling ng mga ito na pansamantalang palayain ang 23 political prisoners mula sa mga detention facilities.
Sa 47-page petition, sinabi ng OSG na hindi dapat mabigyan ng humanitarian considerations ang mga sinasabing miyembro ng terrorist group o ang Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front of the Philippines (CPP-NPA-NDF).
Ipinunto ng OSG sa kanilang petisyon na sinasamantala lamang ng mga makakaliwang grupo ang covid pandemic sa bansa para guluhin ang judicial processes.
“Plainly, the petitioners’ continued detention affords them ready access to government resources if and when the dreaded virus reaches the doors of their cells, no less different outside their cells,” bahagi ng petisyon.
Maalalang sa petisyon, hiniling ng grupo na pansamantalang palayain ang mga inmate na may sakit, matatanda at mga buntis.
Kasama sa mga respondent sa kaso sina Interior Secretary Eduardo Año, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, Bureau of Jail Management at Penology chief Allan Iral, Bureau of Corrections chief Gerald Bantag at anim na iba pang jail at prison authorities.
