The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has approved the importation of 150,000 metric tons of refined sugar.
Based on the issued Sugar Order No. 7, it is necessary to import sugar to ensure an adequate supply and to have a two-month buffer stock. This is the third sugar import program for the 2022-2023 crop year.
SRA Administrator Pablo Azcona ensured that their importation plan underwent careful study.
The document was also signed by Agriculture Usec. Domingo Panganiban, along with other officials.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. previously stated that the importation would not harm local sugar producers, as the analysis considered the amount that the sugarcane farmers could produce and the duration of the sugar supply that would be acquired.
