The enactment of a new law extending the term of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials has effectively frozen the political race for over 670,000 local posts across the Philippines.
Across 42,001 barangays nationwide, the postponed November 2026 elections were slated to determine 16 positions per village, comprising a Punong Barangay, seven Barangay Kagawads, an SK Chairperson, and seven SK Members.
Instead, incumbent local officials are set to remain in office for two additional years as the next synchronized elections shift to November 2028 under a new five-year term framework.
Early this morning, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed the landmark measure into law to formally establish the five-year tenure for all village and youth leaders.
As a direct consequence of this legislative change, the scheduled November 2026 Barangay and SK Elections (BSKE) will no longer push through.
Moving forward, the next local elections are officially set for the second Monday of November 2028, institutionalizing a regular five-year electoral cycle.
The enacted measure amends Republic Act No. 12232, which previously mandated a shorter four-year term for barangay and youth officials.
Government policy analysts note that this legislative adjustment aims to ensure stability in grassroots governance while allowing incumbent leaders to execute their long-term community programs.
