Aabot na sa 10,000 ang bilang ng mga foreign seafarers ang napauwi sa kanilang mga bansa matapos maipit ng ilang linggo sa cruise ships na nasa Manila Bay mula noong Abril dahil pa rin sa Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Base umano sa report kay Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Jaime Morente, sinabi ni BI Seaport Operations Chief Alnazib Decampong na noong August 19 pumalo na sa 9,854 alien seamen ang naiproseso at cleared ng BI boarding inspectors na nakaalis na ng bansa.
Ayon kay Decampong, ang mga seafarers ay agad inihatid ng BI personnel sa Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) kasunod ng pagbaba nila sa kanilang sinasakyang cruise ships at umuwi na sa kani-kanilang mga bansa.
Dagdag ng opisyal, ang mga foreign crewmen ay pinayagan lamang umalis matapos sumalang sa RT-PCR swab test na isinagawa ng Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel at nag-negatibo sa coronavirus.
Noon namang Abril 2020, mahigit 19,300 namang mga Pinoy seamen ang nakauwi na sa kanilang mga pamilya matapos ma-stranded sa mga vessel na na-tengga din sa Manila Bay.
“Like their foreign counterparts, these Pinoy seamen were also swab tested and declared to be free of the virus before they were cleared by our inspectors and sent off to their respective hometowns in Metro Manila and elsewhere throughout the country. We have to ensure that all these seamen will not endanger the health and safety of their loved ones when they come home and reunite with their families. There are only four vessels remaining in the anchorage with only a few crewmen aboard who were left to maintain the ship before their outbound voyage,” ani Decampong.
