Throughout human history, different sports have risen to incredible fame, only to quickly fall out of favor. Who knows how many sports throughout our history have gone and been forgotten. Even with the popularity of football, basketball, and cricket, it is hard to say that these sports will endure forever.
However, what makes the sports industry interesting is innovation. Whenever a sport falls out of favor, there is a new one ready to take its place. In this article, we would like to go over bizarre, strange, and just plain weird sports, that may intrigue even non-fans.
Chess Boxing
You know chess, and you’ve certainly heard of boxing. But, are you familiar with chess boxing? Both of these sports are incredibly popular, not just among fans, but bettors too. A lot of online bookies cover events in boxing, and offer excellent deals and bonuses. If you want to check some out, you can visit Betstation, and find sites that let you bet on boxing and chess.
The popularity that both these sports enjoy has resulted in someone coming up with the bright idea of bringing them together. And so, we have chess boxing. Competitors play a flash game of chess, and then enter the ring. The sport ends either with a K.O. or a checkmate.
Hobbyhorsing
Horse racing is, perhaps, one of the oldest and most beloved sports in the world. From chariot races, to hurdle jumps, to just straight up flat racing, the concept has intrigued people for generations. However, in the Scandinavian peninsula, a group of girls came up with a much safer alternative.
Hobbyhorsing involves racing horses from a starting line to a finish line. It can even involve hurdle jumping. There is, however, one major caveat to hobbyhorsing…that is there are no horses involved. That’s right, hobbyhorsing enthusiasts run over obstacles, while straddling a fake horse.
While at first it may seem goofy, the sport does involve quite a bit of athleticism, talent, and hand-to-eye coordination. However, we don’t see hobbyhorsing becoming the next big thing in the world of sports. Still, it does seem like fun.
Unicycle Hockey
There is no denying that hockey is one of the most popular sports in the world. In the USA, the National Hockey League is among the five most popular leagues in the country. In Canada, hockey is the number one most beloved and watched sport. European countries like the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, and more all enjoy a good game of hockey as well.
However, what if there is no ice around? Some might go to an ice rink that supports hockey. And some might get creative. And so, unicycle hockey was born. What is unicycle hockey? Well, it’s right there on the tin. Unicycle hockey is basically just hockey…on unicycles. The sport is bigger than you might expect. In fact, it has even been addressed by the International Unicycling Federation, with official rules published in 2015. If you are a fan of unicycling and hockey, there could be no more perfect a sport for you.
