The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) has activated an emergency fund campaign to support response operations following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck west of General Santos City on Monday morning. The powerful tremor triggered tsunami warnings, widespread evacuations, and disruptions across several parts of Mindanao.

Under the directives of PRC Chairman and CEO Richard J. Gordon, PRC chapters immediately deployed personnel to conduct rapid assessments and provide assistance to affected communities within minutes of the quake. RC143 volunteers were mobilized, while ambulances were dispatched to North Cotabato, South Cotabato, and Gingoog City to respond to medical emergencies and monitor affected areas. PRC responders also assisted students who experienced hyperventilation following the strong ground shaking.

Health and Welfare Services teams are assessing hospitals and healthcare facilities, while chapter responders continue monitoring communities that may be affected by aftershocks, displacement, and possible tsunami impacts. To ensure readiness, PRC has placed emergency assets on standby across Regions XI and XII, including six ambulances, three food trucks, four water tankers, two Volunteer Emergency Response Vehicles (VERVs), a rescue boat, a Humvee, and cargo vehicles.

“Our teams are already on the ground conducting assessments, providing emergency medical assistance, and coordinating with local authorities in affected areas,” said PRC Secretary General Dr. Gwendolyn Pang. “The situation remains fluid, particularly with the tsunami warning and continuing aftershocks. We are calling on the public and our partners to support the Philippine Red Cross Emergency Appeal so we can immediately provide relief, safe water, healthcare, and other critical assistance.”

Gordon stressed the importance of swift action: “When disasters strike, the speed of humanitarian response can make a significant difference for affected families. The Philippine Red Cross is mobilizing its volunteers, ambulances, food trucks, and emergency assets to ensure assistance reaches communities as quickly as possible. We appeal to the public, our donors, and partners to help us sustain these efforts and prepare for the needs that may arise in the coming days.”

As assessments continue, PRC is preparing to expand emergency medical services, relief distributions, safe water provision, psychosocial support, shelter assistance, and recovery interventions. Donations to the PRC Emergency Appeal will help ensure that vulnerable families receive timely and lifesaving humanitarian aid.

The Philippine Red Cross remains on full alert and ready to scale up its response in coordination with local government units, national agencies, and humanitarian partners.
