VIGAN CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) has prepared an outbreak vaccination program following the confirmation of polio outbreak after 19 years of being free from the disaease.

The department will conduct rounds of polio vaccination for all children under five years old regardless of their previous vaccination status, said Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo in an interview with Bombo Radyo.

This vaccine is different from the other injection that will be given to make sure that no child has missed out protection and to build community immunity against polio.

Domingo strongly urged the public to take part on the outbreak vaccination program to be conducted by DOH to protect their children in its effort to eliminate the said disease

He even encouraged everyone to forget the “dengvaxia scare” where it is one of the reasons as to why parents are scared to let their children get their vaccines.

The official reminded parents and caregivers to maintain clean environment and proper hygiene as a way to avoid polio virus and other diseases.

In 2001, three cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) was recorded in Cavite, Laguna and Misamis Orienta and one contact became positive for vaccine-derived polio virus (VDPV) type 1.

In line with this, former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued Proclamation 135 to heighten the OPV vaccination and raise polio vaccination coverage to 95 percent.
