The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) unequivocally denounces the ruthless and deliberate act of arson targeting the vehicle of Manuel Jaudian, former president of the Cagayan de Oro Press Club, in Sagay town, Camiguin. This blatant attack, carried out under the cover of darkness at approximately 2:00 AM on 10 May 2025, by still unidentified individuals, is an alarming assault on press freedom and an affront to democratic principles.
This reprehensible act has been swiftly flagged through the CHR’s Alisto! Alert Mechanism, a dedicated platform designed to expedite responses to threats against media workers. In adherence to its unwavering commitment to safeguarding journalists and defending fundamental freedoms, the CHR has launched an independent and thorough investigation to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident and bring those responsible to account.
The CHR calls upon law enforcement authorities to act with urgency and determination in ensuring the perpetrators face the full force of justice. Journalists, especially those serving in local communities, must never be left vulnerable to intimidation, harassment, or violence. The right to a free and independent press is not negotiable, any attempt to silence, threaten, or instill fear among media practitioners must be met with swift, uncompromising, and resolute action.
Such brazen attacks are direct assaults on the pillars of free expression and the people’s right to information. The CHR stands firm in condemning all forms of violence against journalists, as these despicable actions erode democracy and seek to undermine truth itself.
“We demand accountability. We demand justice!”
