Engr. Eduardo Guillen reveals long-standing preparations for the impact of El Niño on irrigation. In collaborating with national government agencies, specific measures have been established.

The NIA (National Irrigation Administration) presently tackles the concern by implementing the alternate wetting and drying technique, enabling a potential water usage reduction of 20%.

Nationwide irrigation water supply may be affected based on agency monitoring. Concurrently, the water levels in the country’s six dams, with emphasis on the Angat Dam, continue to decline.

Following Angat Dam’s protocol, irrigation water allocation decreases when the reservoir elevation falls below 180 meters. At present, the water level is 180.89 meters, nearing the critical or minimum operating level of 180 meters.
