Following the Supreme Court’s ruling ending the constitutional right to abortion last summer, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made a change of rule on Tuesday permitting retail pharmacies, including big chains and mail-order businesses, to sell abortion drugs. President Joe Biden’s administration is making this move in an effort to secure broader abortion rights.

Following the FDA ruling, as long as they successfully complete a certification process, retail pharmacies will be allowed to dispense pills.

According to Danco Laboratories, one of two companies that make mifespristone, a medication typically used in combination with misoprostol to bring about a medical abortion during pregnancy “A time when people across the country are struggling to obtain abortion care services, this modification is critically important to expanding access to medication abortion services and will provide healthcare providers with an additional method for providing their patients with a safe and effective option for ending early pregnancy,”

Also, it will no longer enforce a long-standing requirement that women pick up the medication in person. This was part of the change that was partially implemented at the time.
