Handa naman daw ang Pilipinas sakaling kailanganin ng mas mahigpit na storage facility ang mga bakuna ng COVID-19 na inaasahang darating sa bansa para sa clinical trial.
Ayon kay Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Sec. Fortunato de la Peña, pasok sa P89-million budget na inilaan ng Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) ang alokasyon para sa storage facility ng COVID-19 vaccines.
“If there will be vaccines that are using new technology platforms that may require cold temperatures, we have made provisions in the P89-million we have given to the implementation of the project (WHO Solidarity Trial),” ayon sa kalihim.
Ang pahayag ni Dela Peña ay kasunod ng rekomendasyon ni Sen. Francis Tolentino na makipag-partner ang Department of Health (DOH) sa ice cream manufacturers para sa cold storage.
Sa kasalukuyan, ang Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) sa Muntinlupa City ang may pinakamalaking vaccine storage facility sa bansa.
Pero giit ng mambabatas, hindi ito patas para sa mga lugar na maghihintay pa ng ilang araw na biyahe para maabutan ng bakuna.
“I am offering a policy solution. Why don’t you at this earliest stage, touch base with Magnolia Ice creams, Selecta Ice creams, and all other ice cream manufacturers to utilize their ice cream storage facilities?,” ani Tolentino sa budget hearing ng Health department.
Paliwanag ng Science secretary, may mga uri naman ng bakuna na pwedeng sa mismong ospital iimbak.
“For the cases of the vaccines that are actually using the traditional technology platforms, our hospitals have storage facility for this… for the vaccine trials.”
“If the vaccine is similar to those we have been using for immunization usually the temperature required to 2-8 degrees and this can easily be handled in the facilities in the hospital.”
Paglilinaw lang ng kalihim, ang DOH na ang magiging abala sa pagaasikaso ng cold chain storage facility ng mga bakuna kapag aktwal na itong gagamitin sa publiko.
“When there will be massive vaccination, DOH can determine that (storage) because that will be under DOH already.”
Habang hinihintay ng DOST ang final clinical trial protocol mula sa World Health Organization (WHO) ay aktibo raw na kumikilos ang vaccine teams para ihanda ang trial sites sa implementasyon ng Solidarity Trial.
May inihanda naman daw na proseso ang DOH-Bureau of Internal Health Cooperation at WHO para sa logistics at storage ng bakuna.
