The Shizuoka prefecture in Japan aanounced their decision to close three out of four major routes leading to Mt. Fuji’s peak.
It is one of the preventive measures imposed by the said prefecture in order to contain the spread of coronavirus disease.
An official from Shizuoka prefecture said that the routes, which are normally open in summer, will be closed from July 10 to September 10.
He also added that this will be the first time the trails of the 3,766-meter (12,388-foot) volcanic mountain are closed since 1960 when the prefecture began managing the routes.
In 2019, Mt. Fuji welcomed about 236,000 summer climbers according to its official website.
Yamanashio prefecture first announced that it will close the Yoshida trail, the most popular hiking path among the four.
Japan has now reported a total of 16,285 confirmed cases of coronaviorus and 744 deaths.
The Japanese government on Sunday lifted the state of emergency on all 38 prefectures but kept it in place for Tokyo and Osaka.
