MEXICO CITY – First time in history in the country of Mexico to elect a female president who will lead the highest judicial body.
Justice Norma Lucia Pina, by the voting power, with 6-to-5 votes won the election and become the first-ever female president of the Supreme Court in Mexico. She was sworn to serve in a four-year term and oath to keep independent.
“Judicial independence is indispensable in resolving conflicts between the branches of government,” Pina said in a statement.
She added that she will merely focus on building majorities setting aside her personal vision.
“Now is the time of human rights, the time for women,” said Senator Olga Cordero in a post on social media.
Electing the first female president in Supreme Court, especially Pina who had sparred issues in energy policy with Mexico’s left-wing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will increase tension in court.
Pina has a history of defending Mexico’s efforts to transition to renewable energy, however, Lopez Obrador promotes putting the energy sector under the national power utility Comission Nacional de Electricidad (CFE) and the state oil firm Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).
The Supreme Court previously blocked numerous policies of Lopez Obrador which made his relationship with the highest court in Mexico complicated.
Meanwhile, Pina being elected was welcomed by members of the opposition like Kenia Lopez Rabadan.
“Faced with a president who violates the Constitution, now more than ever the Court must show independence, impartiality, objectivity, and professionalism,” said Lopez Rabadan in a Twitter post. (Reports from Bombo Ica Nuñez)
