Nagpasalamat si Bureau of Immigration (BI) Commissioner Jaime Morente kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte sa paghimok nito sa Kongreso sa State of the Nation (SONA) na magpasa ng batas para ma-modernize ang ahensiya at mapalitan ang Philippine Immigration Act of 1940.
Labis umano silang natuwa nang marinig nila ito sa talumpati ng Pangulo dahil matagal na ang Philippine Immigration Law.
Sinabi pa ni Morente na unang beses niya itong marinig mula sa SONA ng isang pangulo na magpasa ng bagong Immigration law.
Hiling naman ni Morente sa mga miyembro ng Congress na bigyang pansin ang kahilingan ng Pangulong Duterte sa pamamagitan ng pag-prioritize ang mga pending bills para ma-reorganize at ma-modernize ang BI.
Nais din nilang magkaroon ng mas mahigpit na kapangyarihan ang BI para mahadlangan ang pagpasok sa bansa ng illegal aliens
Hiniling din sa Kongreso ng Buklod-CID at Immigration Officers Association of the Philippines (IOAP) na i-upgrade ang salary scales ng Immigration personnel para maiwasan ang corruption sa hanay ng rank and file.
“We are elated and gratified upon hearing the President exhorting our lawmakers to pass a new Philippine Immigration Law. That measure is already long overdue. Morente said in a statement. We have no recollection if any of his predecessors have publicly expressed their support for a new Immigration law during their SONAs. Only President Duterte has done that and we in the Bureau are very grateful for his support. We are hopeful that with the President’s support our senators and congressmen would finally see the urgency to pass a new Immigration law for our country. This should have been done a long time ago,” ani Morente.
