Aabot sa 424 recipients ng Merit Scholarship Program (CMSP) ng Commission on Higher Education (CHED) ang maaring matanggalan ng scholarship kung hindi sila bibigyan ng numerical grades ng kanilang pinapasukang unibersidad at kolehiyo sa second quarter ng nakalipas na academic year.

Ginawa ng CHED ang naturang pahayag noong nakaraang linggo kasabay ng kanilang panawagan sa 17 higher educational institutions (HEIs) na sinasabing nagpatupad ng “pass all” policy sa nakalipas na semester na bigyan ng numerical grades ang mga scholars.

Sinabi ng CHED na hindi katulad ng Tertiary Education Subsidy and Tulong Dunong grants,ang CMSP ay ibinibigay sa mga estudyante base sa kanilang scholastic performance o grades.

Kailangan ng mga estudyanteng ito na mapanatili ang general weighted average na 85 percent o ang katumbas ito kung sila ay full scholar o 80 percent naman o equivalent nito kung sila ay half scholar.

“The problem was caused by HEIs who did a ‘pass all’ policy in their second semester. I made it very clear in CHED announcements that while the grading system of HEIs are determined and exercised by individual HEIs in the exercise of their academic freedom, any decision to adopt a ‘pass all’ policy must ensure that the interests of individual students are not compromised,” ani CHED chairman Prospero E. De Vera III.

“CHED has already warned HEIs last June that students who are on merit scholarship and need numeric grades will be severely affected by HEIs that do this,” dagdag pa nito.
