Inimbitahan ng Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) si Senator Rodante Marcoleta na sumama sa isang maritime domain awareness (MDA) flight patungong Kalayaan Island Group (KIG), ayon kay PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela.
Sa isang post sa X (dating Twitter), sinabi ni Tarriela na ang imbitasyon ay magbibigay kay Marcoleta ng pagkakataon “to stand for our rights in the West Philippine Sea.”
“Let us give Senator Marcoleta a chance… I suggest that the good senator join the MDA flight to the Kalayaan Island Group in the future,” ani Tarriela.
Ang pahayag ni Tarriela ay naganap matapos ang pahayag na kontrobersiya ni Marcoleta na puwede raw ibigay ng Pilipinas ang KIG dahil ang ilang bahagi nito ay lampas sa exclusive economic zone (EEZ) ng bansa.
Ngunit ayon sa senador na ang kanyang pahayag ay pinaikling konteksto lamang at may kaugnayan sa proseso ng International Hydrographic Organization.
“I informed them that for the West Philippine Sea to be listed in the International Hydrographic Organization, we would need to deposit maps with the United Nations to notify the world that we are usurping part of the high seas by including the Kalayaan Island Group, since it lies beyond our exclusive economic zone,” paliwanag ni Marcoleta.
Ang KIG, na bahagi ng Spratly Islands, ay sakop ng inaangkin ng Pilipinas kung saan tahanan din ng mga Filipino, local government unit, at military personnel, kabilang ang Pag-asa Island na nasa humigit-kumulang 280 nautical miles ng Kanluran ng Palawan.
Ayon kay Tarriela, ang MDA flights ay regular na isinasagawa upang monitor maritime conditions at ipakita ang presensya ng Pilipinas sa WPS. Ginagamit ang mga flights para mag-survey ng sea routes at subaybayan ang foreign maritime activities sa claimed waters ng bansa.
“He does not have to worry; I can arrange it, and I would be happy to join the operation as well. I am sure that the people of Pag-asa will be happy to welcome you, Senator Marcoleta, sir ????????,” dagdag ni Tarriela.
