Pinaninindigan ni House Committee on Dangerous Drugs chairman Robert Ace Barbets ang kanyang suporta sa reimposition ng parusang kamatayan.
Sa pagdinig ng House Committee on Justice sa 12 pending death penalty bills, iginiit ni Barbers na tanging ang pagpapataw ng parusang kamatayan ang siyang tanging parusang deterrent sa paggawa ng heinous crimes.
“I am for death penalty no matter who our president is. I believe this is the only penalty that would bring shivers to the bones of the evil doers,” ani Barbers.
Tinawag din nito na “flawed” ang argumento ng mga tutol sa revival ng death penalty na ang parusang kamatayan ay para lamang sa mga mahihirap na tao na hindi kayang kumuha ng sariling abogado.
“Lawyers are not the only ones inside the court, there are judges who see and observe the trial and who can propound questions to witnesses and can control the phase and direction of the trial, to see to it that justice is served,” saad ni Barbers.
“The law provides that if the accused cannot get a lawyer, the judge can even appoint one for him. The Public Attorneys Office is there,” dagdag pa nito.
Pinuna rin ng kongresista ang sinasabi ng mga kritiko na hindi maaring ibalik ng Pilipinas ang parusang kamatayan dahil sa commitment nito sa international agreements dahil ang pagbuhay sa capital punishment ay paglabag aniya sa mga kasunduan na ito.
