Undisputed Super Welterweight world boxing champion Jermell Charlo fractured his left hand during sparring for his much-awaited, high-stakes defense against No.1 contender Tim Tszyu.

Due to the accident the fight between the two which was scheduled for January 28, 2023 has been postponed.

Charlo landed a punch during a sparring session at his Houston gym on Tuesday, breaking his left hand between the pinkie and ring fingers and at the base of the thumb.

The 32-year-old American had his hand cast for the next two months after seeing two doctors and a hand specialist in Houston.

“I was sparring and I threw this nice punch and as soon as it landed, I knew something was wrong.I felt my hand throbbing right away,” Charlo said.

Charlo claimed that he felt sad about the incident but had nothing to do cope up from the injury.

He said, he is excited for the match since this was his first opportunity to defend the title.

Charlo was confident in his ability to handle Tszyu.

“The way I am, I would have beaten Tim Tszyu with one hand, but the doctors and the boxing commission won’t allow that,” Charlo said.

The fight between the two has not been announce when it will be held but it is still one of the most eagerly anticipated fights of 2023.

In order to fill the time until Charlo returns to full health, Tszyu, the son of former light welterweight world champion Kostya Tszyu, said he will fight a mandatory rival.

“I’m really disappointed. I felt like the stars aligned for undisputed but we move on. I’m ready to take on the next mandatory challenger. I’ll be back for Charlo once he is ready and healed,” Tszyu said.
