Abot-kaya at mas portable na polymerase chain reaction (PCR) kits ang target na i-develop ngayon ng ilang scientists at engineer para makatulong sa COVID-19 testing ng bansa.
Ayon sa Department of Science and Technology (DOST), batid nila na sa kabila ng matagumpay na testing efforts ng local at national government, ay nagkukulang pa rin ang estado sa gamit para patakbuhin ang tests.
Nagpahayag na raw ng suporta ang Philippine Council for Health Research and Development sa grupo ng mga biologist, clinicians at engineers na bubuo ng “Accelerated development of a cost-efficient microPCR (miPCR) and lateral flow diagnostic (LFD)” o AMPLiFieD system.
Pangungunahan ni Dr. Jeremie de Guzman, Dr. Keith Moore at Ricardo Jose Guerrero ng Ateneo Research Institute for Science and Engineering ang proyekto.
Paliwanag ng DOST, dalawang projects na suportado ng nabanggit na sangay ang pagsasamahin. Una ay ang miPCR, na isang microfluidic PCR device para sa mas madaling amplification o pagpaparami ng DNA at RNA.
Ang pangalawa naman ay ang ADDS Project, na pinalakas na DNA detection system. Naka-base ito sa low-cost lateral flow diagnostic o device na ginagamit para makatunton ng isang target susbtance, na gawa sa hindi mamahaling materyales.
“If successful, AMPLiFieD could provide a functional alternative to commercial qPCR instruments at a significantly lower cost and a much smaller size,” ayon sa DOST.
Itinuturing na gold standard ng World Health Organization ang PCR testing para sa detection ng COVID-19.
“The availability of this alternative system can also potentially lead to creating more cost-effective, more distributed testing laboratories and provide the much-needed testing infrastructure for more responsive testing and tracing of suspected COVID-19 cases.”
Kung maaalala, sinabi ng DOH na kahit may kakayahan na ang mga laboratoryo na mag-proseso ng higit 40,000 test kada araw ay hanggang higit 10,000 kada araw lang ang kanilang nagagawa.
Ang pagkabigo raw sa pag-abot ng kapasidad ay bunsod ng ilang “operational issues” tulad ng kulang na mga gamit.
