LEGAZPI CITY – Farmers in Camalig, Albay are reeling from heavy losses after ashfall from Mayon Volcano’s recent activity damaged their crops, leaving many with nothing to harvest.
Leila Guiriba, a local farmer interviewed by Bombo Radyo Legazpi, said vegetables such as string beans, pechay, and other produce were among the worst hit.
“Most of our crops are either destroyed or have already died,” she lamented.
Guiriba described how their fields turned ghostly white, blanketed by thick volcanic ash.
With farming temporarily impossible, she and other affected residents have resorted to running small stores to sustain their daily needs.
She added that they have been receiving food packs and cash assistance from the government, which has helped them cope with the immediate impact.
Still, Guiriba appealed for continued support, saying farmers need help to recover from the devastation caused by Mayon’s activity.
