The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reported a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that struck near Calayan, Cagayan on May 2, 2025, at 10:45 AM.
The tremor, of tectonic origin, was recorded at a depth of 41 kilometers, located 56 km northwest of Calayan.
Despite the moderate magnitude, Phivolcs has stated that no damage is expected from the quake.
However, residents in the affected areas are advised to remain alert as aftershocks are anticipated following the seismic event.
Tectonic earthquakes occur due to the movement of faults and plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
Given its depth and magnitude, this quake may have been felt in several nearby provinces, though it is unlikely to cause significant structural damage.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and encourage communities to follow standard earthquake preparedness protocols.
Phivolcs reminds the public to stay informed through official channels for updates on aftershocks and safety advisories.
