Capiz 2nd district Representative Fredenil “Fred” Castro resigned from being the president and member of National Unity Party (NUP) after not voting for Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano that NUP endorsed on the recent House Speakership race.

According to Castro, he stepped down as president of the party out of “pure and simple delicadeza.”

“I have resigned as president and member of the National Unity Party simply because that during the speakership race, I was unwavering and a frontliner for [Leyte Representative] Martin Romualdez,” he said.

“I feel that I could no longer be effective as president of the party and as member of the party if I remain there because I took the opposite direction during the speakership,” Castro added.

Congressmen supported Castro’s decision on stepping down from his position.

Anakalusugan Party-list Rep. Mike Defensor said it is “uncommon” for someone to have guts like Castro to leave his position due to difference in beliefs.

Meanwhile, deputy speaker and Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte is expected to join NUP together with other lawmakers from Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban)./ with reports from Bombo Dave Vincent Pasit; edited by Bombo Sol Marquez.
